Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) brings together American Express' merchant-and network-related businesses to enable a sharp focus on using the power of our network to provide unique value to all of our mutual customers. The organization manages the relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accept American Express and runs the company’s payment network and manages bank partnerships globally.

In support of GMNS’s mission, Global Governance, Risk, Remediation, and Operations (GRRO) is focused on delivering a friction free, resilient, and efficient operational core for critical merchant experiences; strengthening monitoring and adherence to network and merchant policies; and leading key operational excellence functions. As part of GRRO, the Global Merchant Account Operations & Resilience team prioritizes strengthening oversight and monitoring for merchant account setup, account management, and maintenance activities.

This team manages data integrity of critical merchant data elements used across Amex for account management throughout the merchant lifecycle, including hierarchy data, cancel codes, origin codes, industry codes, and other key data attributes. Ensuring merchant accounts are accurately linked and data is properly maintained is essential to the effectiveness of Amex systems and business processes.

We are seeking a highly motivated apprentice who will provide incremental capacity to accelerate critical backlogged initiatives that improve account maintenance, data integrity, and governance. This talent can advance well-defined project work while enabling experienced team members to remain focused on higher-complexity priorities and delivery. The ideal candidate will combine strong analytical capabilities with excellent communication skills and a passion for solving complex data challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Strengthening merchant industry code oversight and data integrity through a range of activities that may include: clean up and enhancing data inventories, strengthen code selection guiding principles, conduct training sessions to frontline colleagues, etc
  • Remediate complex data issues impacting merchant account maintenance processes through a structured change management process
  • Collaborate with process owners to analyze merchant data challenges and implement process improvements
  • Identify and strengthen process controls to improve data quality for ongoing monitoring of newly set up accounts
  • Work alongside GenAI technology teams to help develop innovative tools that enable frontline colleagues to better understand merchant business activities and make more informed data element selections
  • Develop and implement strategies to extract, transform, and analyze information from diverse sources using SQL
  • Construct advanced Excel models and reports to visualize and convey key insights and trends to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify business requirements, define metrics, and devise data-driven solutions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technology, Engineering, or a related STEM field, such as Data Science, Data Engineering, Information Technology, Information Management, Statistics, Mathematics, or a similar discipline. Candidates from other STEM backgrounds are also welcome to apply.
  • Ability to commit to the apprenticeship program for a minimum of 12 months.
  • Open to recent graduates with up to one year of professional experience.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to drive initiatives forward by bringing others along through collaboration and influence.
  • Demonstrated track record of driving meaningful business value though data management and strategy.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills for seamless collaboration across internal stakeholders and teams.
  • Knowledge of SQL, Data Science libraries, LUMI Big query and Python is an advantage, but not required.
