About the Role

As a Technical Lead – React Native, you will play a key role in shaping the next version of a live consumer mobile application, ensuring it continues to evolve as usage grows. This is a senior technical leadership position requiring deep software engineering expertise, sound technical judgement and a hands-on approach to product development.

You will work closely with the existing developer and stakeholders to translate product priorities into technical direction and delivery plans. The role combines technical ownership with practical engineering contributions, helping ensure the application remains reliable, scalable and continuously available to its users.

You will bring experience leading major technical decisions for production mobile applications, balancing long-term improvements with the immediate needs of a live product.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the next version of a live consumer mobile application and guide technical decisions as usage grows
  • Assess the existing application to determine which components should be retained or replaced
  • Plan and sequence significant architectural changes while preserving continuity for existing users
  • Lead technical decisions relating to monitoring, application performance, release safety and incident response
  • Translate product priorities into structured technical delivery plans
  • Align technical decisions and delivery priorities with the existing developer and stakeholders
  • Contribute hands-on through prototyping, coding and code reviews

Requirements

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with the ability to reason across mobile architecture, APIs, data flows and dependency failures
  • 5+ years of hands-on React Native experience, including recent production development and experience shipping mobile applications on both iOS and Android
  • 2+ years of technical ownership experience, including responsibility for architecture or major technical decisions. Experience as a Lead Engineer, Staff Engineer or Founding Engineer can qualify
  • 2+ years of experience with consumer applications at scale, holding meaningful technical responsibility for a live application and being able to explain its usage through active users, peak traffic or transaction volumes through a core user flow
  • 2+ years of experience in architecture and migration, including assessing existing systems, determining what to retain or replace and sequencing significant changes while maintaining continuity for users
  • 2+ years of experience in production reliability, having led decisions involving monitoring, performance, release safety or incident response, with the ability to explain the outcomes
  • 2+ years of experience in technical strategy and hands-on leadership, translating product priorities into delivery plans, aligning decisions with developers and stakeholders, and contributing through prototyping, coding or code reviews
  • Ability to take ownership of technical decisions and clearly explain their outcomes
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with existing developers and stakeholders to align technical priorities
  • Willingness to remain actively involved in hands-on engineering rather than focusing exclusively on management

Nice to Have

  • Experience taking a rapidly developed prototype or early-stage application through a production overhaul
  • Experience leading phased rebuilds, migrations or rollouts while keeping the original application operational
  • Experience integrating retail, grocery, catalogue or shopping services
  • Experience operating AI-powered features, including managing accuracy, latency, costs and fallback mechanisms
  • Experience owning backend or cloud architecture alongside a mobile application
  • Experience establishing engineering standards and coaching developers within a small team
