Software Development Engineer III
Majid Al Futtaim
Gurugram, Haryana, India
Role Overview
We are looking for a highly skilled Software Development Engineer III (SDE-3) with strong expertise in Java backend development, distributed systems, and microservices architecture. The candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and scaling high-performance backend services that power last-mile delivery and fulfilment operations.
The ideal candidate should have strong problem-solving skills, sound architectural judgment, and the ability to drive technical initiatives independently. Experience in last-mile delivery, logistics, e-commerce, order management, or fulfilment systems is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Backend Engineering: Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
- System Design: Drive the design of distributed systems, microservices, REST APIs, and event-driven architectures.
- Last-Mile Solutions: Build and enhance services supporting delivery allocation, driver availability, order tracking, delivery promise, route optimisation, and delivery status management.
- Scalability and Performance: Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, optimise database queries, and ensure services can handle high transaction volumes.
- Messaging and Integration: Design asynchronous workflows using Kafka or similar messaging platforms, ensuring reliable event processing and data consistency.
- Database Engineering: Design efficient data models and queries using relational and NoSQL databases, with a strong understanding of indexing, partitioning, and caching.
- Technical Ownership: Take ownership of features end to end, from requirement analysis and solution design to implementation, deployment, and production support.
- Engineering Excellence: Establish coding standards, write unit and integration tests, conduct code reviews, and improve overall software quality.
- Reliability and Observability: Implement logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and fault-tolerance mechanisms to maintain service reliability.
- Technical Leadership: Mentor junior engineers, collaborate with product managers and cross-functional teams, and contribute to architectural and technical decisions.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- 8–10 years of professional software development experience, with strong hands-on expertise in Java.
- Strong knowledge of Java 11 or later, object-oriented programming, collections, concurrency, multithreading, and JVM fundamentals.
- Hands-on experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, RESTful APIs, and microservices.
- Good understanding of distributed systems, service-to-service communication, resiliency patterns, and eventual consistency.
- Experience with Kafka or equivalent event-streaming/message-broker technologies.
- Strong knowledge of SQL databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, including query optimisation and data modelling.
- Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or similar technologies.
- Familiarity with Redis or other caching solutions.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Strong debugging, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to independently drive technical solutions and make sound engineering decisions.
Preferred Qualifications – Last Mile and Logistics Domain
- Experience building software for last-mile delivery, logistics, e-commerce, or supply-chain platforms.
- Understanding of delivery lifecycle management, including order assignment, dispatch, pickup, delivery, cancellations, and returns.
- Familiarity with driver/rider availability, capacity planning, delivery slot allocation, and order-to-driver assignment.
- Exposure to route optimisation, distance and ETA calculations, geospatial systems, and mapping services.
- Understanding of delivery promise and on-time delivery (OTD) / on-time handover (OTH) metrics.
- Experience with real-time event processing, location updates, and high-volume status tracking.
- Exposure to order management systems (OMS), warehouse management, fulfilment, or store-based picking operations.
