The Position

Role Overview

The Senior Backend Engineer is a hands-on product engineering role responsible for designing, developing, testing and evolving secure, scalable backend capabilities for Amplify Health products, with an initial focus on Core Claims.

The role combines deep Java and Spring engineering expertise with end-to-end ownership of product features, APIs, integration services, domain logic, databases, performance and production quality. The successful candidate will work closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts, Architects, QA Engineers, Frontend Engineers and Platform/DevOps colleagues to turn product requirements into reusable, maintainable capabilities for multiple customers and markets.

Responsibilities

1) Product Feature Engineering

• Design, develop, test and maintain backend product capabilities using Java and the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security, Spring Integration and Spring Cloud.
• Own medium-to-complex product deliverables from technical discovery and solution design through implementation, automated testing, release and post-release validation.
• Turn product epics, user stories and acceptance criteria into maintainable engineering designs and clearly scoped technical tasks.
• Build reusable product capabilities that can support multiple markets and customers while avoiding unnecessary customer-specific customisation.
• Contribute to the evolution of Core Claims capabilities across claims adjudication, benefits, rules, utilisation, pre-authorisation and associated workflows.

2) Backend Architecture, APIs and Integration

• Design and implement scalable microservices, RESTful APIs and service-to-service integrations using well-defined contracts, OpenAPI/Swagger and JSON.
• Develop product integration layers and reusable gateway capabilities that connect Core Claims with internal and external services.
• Apply appropriate patterns for synchronous and asynchronous processing, validation, error handling, retries, idempotency and transaction management.
• Work with identity and access-management capabilities, including OAuth 2.0, JWT, API gateways and role-based access control.
• Contribute to technical design decisions and ensure new services align with product architecture, security and operational standards.

3) Claims, Benefits and Domain Engineering

• Implement and enhance product logic for claims processing, benefit matching, exclusions, limits, accumulations, calculations, tariffs and pre-authorisation.
• Understand relationships between benefit configuration, clinical/reference data, product rules and transactional claims data when designing new capabilities.
• Collaborate with Product Managers and Business Analysts to clarify business rules, edge cases and expected outcomes before and during development.
• Develop domain-aware solutions that are testable, explainable and suitable for extension across different product and market needs.

4) Data, Persistence and Migration

• Design and maintain relational data models and persistence logic using PostgreSQL, SQL, Hibernate and JPA.
• Write efficient queries and optimise database access patterns, indexing, transactions and data-processing logic.
• Develop controlled schema changes and data migrations using Flyway or equivalent migration tooling.
• Assess data integrity and backward-compatibility impacts when changing identifiers, configuration structures or domain models.
• Create clear migration, verification and rollback instructions where product changes require data transformation.

5) Engineering Quality and Automation

• Create comprehensive unit, integration and component tests using JUnit, Mockito and related testing frameworks.
• Participate actively in code reviews and maintain high standards for readability, modularity, testability, security and maintainability.
• Use static analysis, dependency scanning and engineering quality gates to identify and resolve defects and vulnerabilities early.
• Partner with QA engineers to define test strategy, support automated regression coverage and resolve defects efficiently.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation in source repositories, Jira, Confluence, API specifications and engineering runbooks.

6) Performance, Reliability and Observability

• Analyse and improve API, service and database performance, including high-volume processing and concurrency-sensitive scenarios.
• Design resilient services with appropriate timeout, retry, fallback, caching and failure-recovery approaches.
• Implement structured logging, health checks, metrics and tracing so that services can be monitored and diagnosed effectively.
• Investigate complex defects and production issues using logs, traces, database evidence and code-level debugging, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
• Contribute to non-functional requirements covering scalability, availability, resilience, security and supportability.

7) Cloud-Native Delivery and DevOps Collaboration

• Build and support services deployed on Microsoft Azure and Kubernetes-based environments.
• Work with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Azure DevOps or equivalent CI/CD tooling to package, deploy and validate product services.
• Collaborate with Platform and DevOps engineers on environment configuration, secrets, connectivity, deployment pipelines and operational readiness.
• Support controlled product releases, including release notes, deployment dependencies, verification steps and rollback considerations.
• Participate in application modernisation, framework upgrades and dependency remediation while managing compatibility and regression risk.

8) Senior Engineering Contribution

• Provide technical guidance to developers, review pull requests and help resolve complex design, code, integration and data issues.
• Break down complex features, identify dependencies and contribute realistic engineering estimates during product planning and refinement.
• Raise technical risks early and present pragmatic solution options and trade-offs to the Technical Lead, Technology Development Manager and product stakeholders.
• Share knowledge of the codebase, product architecture and healthcare claims domain to improve team capability and reduce reliance on individual experts.
• Demonstrate ownership, collaboration and clear written and verbal communication within a distributed Agile product team.

Experience and Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline.
• Minimum 7 years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial hands-on backend development responsibility in enterprise products.
• Strong hands-on experience with Java, including modern Java versions, and the Spring ecosystem: Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security, Spring Integration and Spring Cloud.
• Demonstrated experience designing and delivering microservices, server-side business logic and enterprise integrations.
• Strong understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, clean-code principles and distributed-system fundamentals.
• Advanced experience with RESTful APIs, JSON and OpenAPI/Swagger; experience with SOAP or enterprise integration patterns is advantageous.
• Strong PostgreSQL and SQL skills, including relational modelling, query optimisation, transactions and controlled database migration.
• Hands-on experience with Hibernate/JPA, JUnit, Mockito, Maven or Gradle, Git and CI/CD pipelines.
• Practical experience with Microsoft Azure, Docker, Kubernetes and Helm.
• Experience with secure application development, authentication/authorisation and dependency or vulnerability remediation.
• Experience with application monitoring, structured logging, metrics, tracing and production troubleshooting.
• Experience modernising legacy applications or upgrading Java/Spring frameworks while maintaining backward compatibility is advantageous.
• Experience with asynchronous messaging, Kafka, Redis, Camunda, Drools or other workflow/rules technologies is advantageous.
• Experience in health insurance, claims processing, benefit configuration, pre-authorisation or healthcare technology is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with HL7 FHIR and healthcare integration patterns is advantageous.
• Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to explain technical decisions and risks to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently, mentor colleagues and collaborate effectively across a distributed Agile product team.
