The Challenge:

Shipturtle powers multi-vendor marketplaces by connecting merchants, vendors, commerce platforms and fulfilment partners. Our backend currently handles around 2 million API calls a day. We’re setting out to scale that to 15–20 million, while improving speed and reliability. This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of the platform’s technical evolution: challenge existing assumptions and make the hard architecture calls. You’ll have the freedom to rethink components and technology choices, not just maintain what already exists.

What you will own:

  • Own the backend architecture and roadmap for the next stage of scale.
  • Find and remove bottlenecks across APIs, databases, queues, caching and background processing.
  • Design resilient distributed and event-driven systems for high-volume integrations, webhooks and unpredictable traffic.
  • Modernize the platform where it makes sense, choosing pragmatically between improving the current stack, modularizing services and introducing new technologies.
  • Improve database performance, data access patterns, concurrency and operational reliability.
  • Partner with engineering leads, write and review code, lead critical implementations and raise the team’s engineering standards.
  • Work with infrastructure colleagues on capacity, observability, availability and cloud cost efficiency.

What you bring

  • 5+ years building backend systems, including hands-on experience scaling applications.
  • Strong fundamentals in system design, distributed systems, concurrency, API design and performance engineering.
  • Deep practical experience with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL, plus caching and messaging technologies.
  • Experience with backend frameworks such as Laravel/PHP, Java/Spring Boot, Node.js or comparable technologies.
