This role focuses on building, tuning, and operating the enterprise search capabilities that power fast, relevant, and reliable discovery experiences across Marriott’s digital commerce channels.

We are looking for a Software Engineer with strong hands-on experience in search technologies, including index design, query construction, analyzers, and relevance tuning on platforms such as Amazon OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, Apache Solr, or Lucid works Fusion. The role also requires solid backend engineering skills in Java and Python using Spring WebFlux and FastAPI to expose search capabilities through scalable, production-ready services.

You will work closely with senior engineers, architects, product partners, QA, SRE, and dependent commerce teams to deliver secure, observable, and high-performing search solutions. The ideal candidate enjoys working with search relevance, indexing pipelines, query performance, distributed systems, and Agile engineering practices.

Job Responsibilities:

Technical Contributions & Collaboration:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain search capabilities for the Enterprise Commerce Search platform, including indexes, mappings, analyzers, and query templates.
  • Build and enhance search APIs and event-driven integrations using Java with Spring WebFlux and Python with FastAPI.
  • Implement query processing, filters, facets, autosuggestions, recommendations, multilingual and relevance-tuning enhancements.
  • Develop and support indexing pipelines and data ingestion flows between source systems and enterprise search engines.
  • Participate in code reviews, relevance reviews, technical discussions, troubleshooting, and engineering best practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Product Catalog, digital channels, QA, SRE, and platform engineering.

Delivering Technology:

  • Translate business and functional requirements into effective search schemas, queries, and ranking behaviors.
  • Build and enhance search APIs, indexing pipelines, data transformations, and platform integrations.
  • Write unit and integration tests and support functional, relevance, performance, and regression testing.
  • Participate in CI/CD deployments, index migrations, and reindexing activities across lower and production environments.
  • Monitor search services, analyze query performance, logs, and distributed traces, and support timely resolution of defects and production issues.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, and operational concerns and communicate them proactively.

IT Governance:

  • Follow enterprise architecture, development, release, and operational governance standards.
  • Apply secure coding practices and comply with API security, privacy, and data-protection requirements.
  • Maintain technical documentation such as index and schema definitions, API specifications, design notes, deployment procedures, and runbooks.

Skills and Experience:

Search Technologies:

  • 2–4 years of software development experience, with hands-on work on search technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with a search platform such as Amazon OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, Apache Solr, or Lucid works Fusion.
  • Working knowledge of search indexes, mappings and schemas, analyzers, tokenizers, and query DSL construction.
  • Experience with query tuning, filters, facets, sorting, pagination, synonyms, stop words, boosting, and relevance improvement.
  • Experience building and supporting indexing pipelines, reindexing, and data transformation between source systems and search engines.

Backend & Microservices:

  • Good proficiency in Java and Python, with working experience using Spring Web Flux and FastAPI to integrate with and expose Amazon OpenSearch and Apache Solr search capabilities.
  • Experience developing, testing, and troubleshooting search features on OpenSearch and Solr, including query DSL, Solr request handlers, and search components.
  • Working knowledge of OpenSearch and Solr cluster concepts such as shards, replicas, nodes, index aliases, SolrCloud collections, and ZooKeeper.
  • Understanding of search features such as typeahead, recommendations, spell check, multilingual, and query rewriting.
  • Experience analyzing search latency, timeouts, and throughput, and applying query, index, and cluster-level optimizations such as caching, deep pagination strategies, and shard sizing.

Cloud & DevOps:

  • Hands-on experience with Amazon OpenSearch or Lucidworks Fusion (Solr), including cluster setup and index management.
  • Experience with CI/CD, Git, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with production monitoring and observability tools such as Dynatrace, including logs, metrics, distributed traces, and search query performance analysis.
