ServiceNow Developer
Job Title: ServiceNow Developer
Purpose of the Role
The ServiceNow Developer is responsible for designing, configuring, developing, testing, and supporting enterprise-grade solutions on the ServiceNow platform.
This role requires a ServiceNow developer who can operate effectively in a larger, governed IT organization, where platform architecture standards, security requirements, documentation, testing, release management, and operational readiness are expected parts of delivery. The individual should be comfortable working within structured development processes while also using approved AI-enabled tools to accelerate scripting, improve quality, support testing, and enhance code reviews.
This is a hands-on technical role focused on ServiceNow configuration and development, disciplined SDLC execution, AI-assisted development practices, and strong collaboration with product, architecture, security, infrastructure, platform, and business stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
1. ServiceNow Configuration and Development
- Configure, customize, and develop within the ServiceNow platform to support enterprise business processes.
- Build and maintain ServiceNow workflows, flows, forms, tables, business rules, client scripts, UI policies, catalog items, integrations, and automation.
- Support ServiceNow modules and capabilities as assigned, including ITSM, ITOM, HAM, SAM, Employee Relations, Employee Journeys, or other platform areas.
- Develop integrations between ServiceNow and other enterprise systems using APIs, IntegrationHub, MID Server, web services, or other approved integration methods.
- Ensure ServiceNow development follows platform best practices, upgrade-safe configuration principles, and enterprise governance standards.
- Partner with ServiceNow administrators, platform owners, process owners, and business stakeholders to deliver practical and sustainable solutions.
2. AI-Assisted Development, Testing, and Code Review
- Use approved AI development tools responsibly to accelerate ServiceNow scripting, configuration analysis, documentation, test generation, troubleshooting, and solution design.
- Apply AI tools as an enhancement to technical judgment, not as a replacement for developer accountability.
- Use approved AI tools to identify ServiceNow test scenarios, strengthen regression coverage, and document potential gaps that require developer validation.
- Participate in AI-assisted review of ServiceNow scripts and configurations while validating outputs for accuracy, security, maintainability, and compliance with enterprise standards.
- Maintain traceability for AI-assisted work by documenting how generated scripts, configurations, and test assets were reviewed and approved through established development and governance processes.
- Stay current on approved AI development practices, emerging capabilities, and responsible-use guidelines.
3. Governance, Architecture, and Enterprise Standards
- Work within established enterprise architecture, security, data, and development governance processes.
- Ensure solutions are secure, scalable, supportable, and aligned with approved technology patterns.
- Participate in architecture reviews, technical design sessions, and governance checkpoints as needed.
- Document technical designs, configuration decisions, integration patterns, dependencies, and operational considerations.
- Avoid unnecessary technical debt, duplication, unsupported customization, and one-off solutions that conflict with enterprise standards.
- Incorporate feedback from architecture, security, infrastructure, and platform governance teams early in the delivery process.
4. SDLC, Agile, and Delivery Discipline
- Participate in agile delivery activities, including backlog refinement, estimation, sprint planning, demos, retrospectives, and release planning.
- Develop against clearly defined acceptance criteria and ensure work is fully tested before release.
- Support release management activities including deployment planning, change documentation, validation, and post-release support.
- Identify technical risks, dependencies, blockers, and readiness concerns early.
- Communicate progress, issues, and trade-offs clearly to technical leads, product owners, and project stakeholders.
- Understand that “code complete” does not mean “ready for production”; testing, documentation, support readiness, and operational handoff are part of delivery.
5. Testing, Quality, and Operational Readiness
- Create and execute ServiceNow unit tests, configuration validation, integration tests, and developer-level platform validation.
- Support QA, UAT, regression testing, and production validation activities.
- Use AI and automation tools where appropriate to improve test coverage and development efficiency.
- Troubleshoot production issues and support root cause analysis.
- Ensure solutions include appropriate logging, monitoring considerations, error handling, and support documentation.
- Partner with support and infrastructure teams to ensure solutions can be successfully operated after go-live.
6. Collaboration and Business Alignment
- Work closely with business stakeholders, product owners, analysts, platform owners, and technical teams to understand desired outcomes.
- Ask clarifying questions to ensure requirements are complete, practical, and aligned with enterprise direction.
- Provide technical input on feasibility, complexity, sequencing, and risk.
- Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Help identify opportunities to simplify processes, automate manual work, improve user experience, and reduce operational friction.
- Act as a responsible technical partner who understands both business needs and enterprise technology constraints.
Role Boundaries
- This is a hands-on ServiceNow development role, not an administrator-only position.
Required ServiceNow Experience
- 2+ years of hands-on experience configuring or developing within the ServiceNow platform.
- Experience with ServiceNow scripting, business rules, client scripts, UI policies, flows, forms, tables, catalog items, and workflow automation.
- Understanding of ServiceNow platform configuration standards and upgrade-safe development practices.
- Experience supporting ServiceNow integrations using APIs, web services, IntegrationHub, MID Server, or similar integration approaches.
- Familiarity with ITSM or other ServiceNow modules such as HAM, SAM, Employee Relations, Employee Journeys, ITOM, HRSD, CSM, or related platform capabilities.
Preferred ServiceNow Qualifications
- ServiceNow Certified System Administrator, Certified Application Developer, or relevant module-specific ServiceNow certifications.
- Experience delivering ServiceNow solutions in a large enterprise environment with formal platform governance, architecture review, security review, and release management processes.
- Advanced experience with one or more ServiceNow modules, such as ITSM, ITOM, HAM, SAM, HRSD, CSM, Employee Relations, or Employee Journeys.
- Familiarity with ITIL practices as applied to ServiceNow implementations and operations.
Success Measures: First 12 Months
- Consistently completes assigned ServiceNow development and configuration work in alignment with agreed requirements, delivery commitments, and enterprise platform standards.
- Demonstrates effective use of approved AI tools to improve delivery speed, code quality, testing, and documentation.
- Produces ServiceNow configurations and customizations that are supportable, scalable, and aligned with platform standards.
- Actively participates in ServiceNow peer reviews, design reviews, testing, and release readiness activities.
- Reduces rework by clarifying requirements, identifying risks early, and validating solutions before release.
- Improves ServiceNow solution reliability, maintainability, documentation, and support readiness.
- Builds strong working relationships with product owners, platform teams, architecture, security, QA, and support teams.
- Contributes to automation, simplification, and modernization efforts across the ServiceNow platform.
Cultural Fit Expectations
- Enterprise-first mindset.
- Quality before shortcuts.
- Comfortable working within governance.
- Accountable for the code, not just the task.
- Uses AI responsibly and thoughtfully.
- Strong technical curiosity.
- Clear and proactive communicator.
- Willing to challenge assumptions respectfully.
- Comfortable asking questions before building.
- Values testing, documentation, and supportability.
- Understands that delivery includes adoption, stability, and long-term maintainability.
Note (BGV): **As part of the candidate onboarding, we would conduct a candidate background check that includes education, employment history, criminal records, Reference check, etc.**
