Location: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), Mumbai

Job Category: Project Research Staff

About the Project

This government-funded initiative focuses on the development, integration and demonstration of drones and allied technologies. Within this programme, the role will contribute to UAV Traffic Management (UTM) research by developing methods and tools to coordinate drone operations safely and efficiently while accounting for airspace constraints and operational requirements. The project promotes research, technology development and industry-academia collaboration.

Role Overview

The Operations Research Scientist will build simulation-based modelling and analysis frameworks for managing traffic. The work will connect rigorous Operations Research methods with practical decision-support capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate and solve optimization models for UAV routing, trajectory planning, mission scheduling, fleet/resource allocation, airspace network design and traffic-capacity planning.
  • Develop strategic deconfliction and coordination algorithms for safe, efficient planning of multiple UAV operations.
  • Build simulation and analytical frameworks to evaluate traffic demand, congestion, throughput, delays, resource utilization and system performance.
  • Apply Operations Research methods to transportation, logistics, fleet coordination and network-management challenges.
  • Analyze operational, trajectory and geospatial data to define performance metrics, conduct scenario and sensitivity analyses, and validate model outcomes.
  • Translate research models into reproducible, testable software components, collaborating with software and autonomy teams and documenting technical findings.
  • Bridge the gap between theoretical R&D and production-ready engineering solutions.

Qualifications and Key Skills Required

  • PhD in a relevant discipline with relevant experience, OR MTech/ME or BTech/BE (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline with relevant research or industry experience. Relevant disciplines include Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Strong fundamentals in optimization, mathematical modelling, algorithms, simulation modelling and quantitative analysis.
  • Familiarity with optimization modelling libraries or solvers (e.g., Pyomo, OR-Tools, Gurobi or CPLEX), simulation tools (e.g., SimPy, AnyLogic or equivalent), and Monte Carlo Simulation is desirable.
  • Proficiency in Python, modelling and data analysis.
  • Ability to validate models, conduct sensitivity or scenario analysis, interpret results, and communicate technical findings clearly in written reports and discussions.
