Job Description
Someone who can build great web experiences, but also understands what happens before the first byte reaches the browser and after the user clicks a button. Someone who is obsessed with performance, understands the product end-to-end, and treats engineering as more than writing components. If Core Web Vitals go red, it should bother you.
What you’ll do
- Own the web experience — build and evolve applications using Next.js, TypeScript and JavaScript, with strong engineering foundations.
- Own web performance — deeply understand Core Web Vitals, LCP, INP, CLS, TTFB, rendering strategies, hydration, caching and resource loading.
- Measure, don’t guess — use browser profiling, Lighthouse, RUM and other observability/profiling tools to find bottlenecks and continuously improve real-user performance.
- Think beyond components — understand the journey from CDN and caching to server rendering, APIs, browser execution and the final user experience.
- Design for scale — build reusable frontend foundations and patterns that can grow across products and teams without unnecessary complexity.
- Think from first principles — question assumptions, understand trade-offs and choose approaches because they fit the problem, not because they’re fashionable.
- Think product, not tickets — care about how the entire experience works, performs and feels to the user.
- Keep it lean — challenge unnecessary dependencies, excessive JavaScript, expensive rendering and complexity that doesn’t earn its place.
- Be cross-functional when needed — collaborate across backend, infrastructure, design and product. The problem matters more than where the frontend boundary ends.
- Move with pace — build, ship, measure, learn and improve.
What we’re looking for
- 3–5 years of software engineering experience, with strong frontend and web fundamentals.
- Strong hands-on expertise in Next.js, React, TypeScript and JavaScript.
- Deep understanding of browser fundamentals, rendering, networking, caching and web performance.
- Strong understanding of Core Web Vitals and practical experience diagnosing and improving them.
- Experience with SSR, SSG, CSR, hydration and modern Next.js rendering/caching patterns — and knowing when to use which.
- Comfortable with RUM, profiling, observability and performance-debugging tools.
- Understanding of the infrastructure behind modern web applications — CDNs, cloud, caching, deployments, APIs and edge/server-side execution.
- Ability to reason about performance, scalability, maintainability, reliability and cost, not just UI implementation.
AI is part of the engineering toolkit
We expect you to use AI effectively to build faster and better — for coding, debugging, profiling, testing, exploration and understanding unfamiliar systems.
But we’re not looking for a prompt hero.
You should understand what you’re shipping, challenge what AI produces and own the engineering decisions behind it.
The mindset we’re looking for
Performance is a feature. Simple over clever. Outcomes over tickets. Engineering judgement over trends. Pace without shortcuts.
If you enjoy squeezing milliseconds out of experiences, understanding what happens across the entire request lifecycle, and stepping beyond the frontend boundary when the problem demands it — you’ll fit right in at upGrad.
