Software Development Engineer - 2/3
Software Development Engineer 2/3 – Backend
Team: Consumer Product
Location: India (Gurgaon or Bangalore)
Company Introduction
We're noon, the Middle East's homegrown e-commerce company, built to champion the region and shape a brighter, more exciting future.
At noon, we never stop. We're hungry for change, constantly testing, failing, learning and iterating. Growth, passion, fearlessness and tenacity drive everything we do. If you're ready to help us redefine online customer experiences, we want you on our team.
About the role
Consumer Product teams own the systems behind what millions of customers see and do on noon every day, across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. As a backend engineer, you will own services end to end, from the design doc to the dashboard you watch after rollout, and see your work land in front of customers quickly.
What you’ll do
- Design, build and operate high-traffic backend services and the APIs (REST and gRPC) that power noon's app and web, and evolve them without breaking existing clients.
- Build event-driven workflows and pipelines that react to orders, payments, deliveries and customer actions, handling retries, ordering and reprocessing safely.
- Integrate with internal teams and external partners, handling failures, timeouts and rate limits gracefully.
- Own the reliability, performance and cost of your services, with solid logging, metrics, alerting and tracing in place.
- Take features from problem definition through design, launch and iteration, working directly with product, design, data and business teams.
- Join the on-call rotation for what you own, and help the engineers around you improve through reviews and pairing.
- Move fast, experiment often and take ownership of measurable results.
Level expectations
- SDE 2 (4+ years of backend engineering): Independently owns features and services end to end, writes clean, well-tested code, and handles integrations and on-call with limited guidance.
- SDE 3 (6+ years, leading the design of production systems): Owns the technical direction of one or more domains, leads design for complex multi-service systems, mentors others and drives cross-team initiatives.
What you’ll need
- Professional backend engineering experience in line with the level above.
- Strong proficiency in at least one language such as Python, Go or Java, with the appetite to pick up others. Python and Go are used day to day.
- Understanding of microservices and experience integrating with third-party APIs.
- Experience with relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or Spanner, including schema design, transactions and data consistency.
- Experience with asynchronous or event-driven systems such as message queues, background workers and scheduled jobs.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a high degree of ownership.
- Clear communication and the ability to work well with product, data and other engineering teams.
Good to have
- Experience with key-value or wide-column stores such as Redis or Bigtable.
- Hands-on experience with Google Cloud (Pub/Sub, Spanner, BigQuery), Kubernetes and Open Telemetry.
- Experience with high-traffic read paths: latency budgets, caching and graceful degradation.
- Experience with payments, security or handling sensitive data and PII.
- Experience building multi-country, multi-currency products, including English and Arabic localization.
- Working effectively with AI coding agents, including judgement on what to verify before a change lands.
Who will excel?
- People with high standards who understand that hard work matters.
- Engineers who are relentlessly resourceful and have a deep bias for action.
- Builders with the courage to be fiercely original.
noon is not for everyone. Readiness to adapt, pivot and learn is essential. If you match most of this but not all of it, apply anyway.
