Scientist – Microbial Systems Biology & Metabolic Engineering

MetFlux Research
Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

Company Description MetFlux Research develops computational frameworks that represent human physiology in a structured, coherent way, integrating data from genomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, imaging, and biomarkers. At the core of MetFlux’s work is the Omega Initiative, a long-term effort to build a digital blueprint of human physiology as an interconnected network of pathways, regulatory feedback, and state transitions. This architecture supports mechanism-led research and development, including evaluation of complex multi-active interactions and early risk identification. It also powers personalized applications that translate multi-omics and biomarker data into pathway-level physiological insights. MetFlux operates at the intersection of systems biology, computation, and translational science, with teams based in Boston, USA and Bengaluru, India.

Role Description The Scientist – Microbial Systems Biology & Metabolic Engineering will lead the design, analysis, and interpretation of experiments focused on microbial physiology, metabolism, and host–microbiome interactions. Day-to-day responsibilities include developing and refining microbial systems biology models, performing metabolic pathway analysis, collaborating on multi-omics data integration, and translating experimental observations into computational frameworks aligned with the Omega Initiative. The scientist will work closely with computational biologists and software engineers to connect microbial network models with broader human physiology representations and support mechanism-driven research questions. Additional activities include preparing technical documentation, contributing to publications and internal reports, and presenting findings to cross-functional teams. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Bengaluru.

Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in microbial systems biology, metabolic engineering, and quantitative physiology, with experience in studying microbial metabolism and regulatory networks.
  • Proficiency in designing and analyzing wet-lab experiments (e.g., microbial culturing, metabolic flux analysis, omics data generation) and in interpreting multi-omics datasets.
  • Experience with computational modeling tools and programming languages commonly used in systems biology (such as MATLAB, Python, R, or equivalent), including network and pathway modeling.
  • Skill in data analysis, statistics, and visualization to derive mechanistic insights from complex biological datasets and to communicate results clearly to diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams, work independently on open-ended scientific problems, and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Doctoral degree (PhD) in systems biology, microbiology, bioengineering, computational biology, or a related field; exceptional candidates with a master’s degree and substantial relevant experience may be considered.
  • Prior experience in host–microbiome research, metabolic network reconstruction, or multi-scale modeling is highly beneficial; exposure to translational or industry-oriented research is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, including experience with scientific writing, presentations,
