APAC Portfolio (Sr.) Manager
Role Purpose
We are looking for an independent, commercially minded professional to join our Portfolio team and own the identification, evaluation, and advancement of novel pharmaceutical opportunities for our APAC markets, taking each opportunity from first signal to a clear recommendation and driving the agreed next steps.
The role will focus on innovative and differentiated assets, including NCEs, 505(b)(2) products, and other value-added pharmaceutical opportunities, assessing their strategic fit, value, and timing across our key APAC markets to decide where our time and resources are best invested.
The individual will work cross-functionally with Commercial, Medical, Regulatory, IP, Market Access, Business Development, Finance, and other internal teams, integrating their input into a single Portfolio view of each opportunity and a clear recommendation the business can act on.
Scope and Decision Rights
The Head of Portfolio APAC sets strategy, priorities, and major portfolio decisions. Within that framework, this role independently drives its own analyses, opportunities, and projects, makes recommendations, and executes the agreed actions. It is expected to move work forward without step-by-step approval and to judge when to involve others:
- Decides directly: how to scope and structure an evaluation, which data and internal experts to draw on, when a first answer is sufficient, and which opportunities to screen out against agreed criteria.
- Aligns with the Head of Portfolio APAC: recommendations to advance, pause, or stop an opportunity, changes to priorities, and positions to take with potential partners.
- Escalates: matters with material financial, legal, IP, or reputational impact, and cross-functional disagreements that cannot be resolved at working level.
Key Responsibilities
- Own an up-to-date view of the APAC opportunity pipeline across near-, mid-, and long-term horizons, flag gaps and imbalances, and recommend areas for expansion, investment, or rationalization.
- Proactively scan global markets, pipelines, and competitor activity to identify novel product opportunities relevant to APAC, and bring forward those worth pursuing with a clear rationale.
- Lead the evaluation of shortlisted opportunities end-to-end, integrating medical, clinical, IP, regulatory, development, commercial, competitive, and market-access perspectives with timing and economics, and scaling the depth of analysis to what the decision actually requires.
- Build a working understanding of treatment guidelines, clinical practice, patient pathways, unmet needs, and physician preferences in each market, and use it to judge whether an opportunity is genuinely differentiated against current and future standards of care.
- Assess competitive landscape, product differentiation, market potential, pricing, reimbursement, and positioning, distinguishing real, reachable opportunities from theoretical ones.
- Drive product evaluations to a conclusion with Commercial, Regulatory, IP, Market Access, Medical, and Business Development teams, involving the right people at the right time and reconciling conflicting inputs.
- Build patient-based forecasts, sales potential, and scenario analyses, making key assumptions explicit and identifying which of them drive the decision.
- Identify relevant companies and assets for partnering and licensing opportunities, and recommend, together with Business Development, which to prioritize and how to approach them.
- Plan and follow through on partnering conferences: prioritize target companies, products, and meetings beforehand, and turn outcomes into agreed next steps afterwards.
- Own follow-through on assigned opportunities, keeping evaluation status, partner interactions, and follow-up actions current, and making sure agreed actions are delivered.
- Present assigned areas in periodic portfolio reviews with management in decision-ready form, highlighting key risks, gaps, growth opportunities, the recommended course of action, and the decisions required.
Ways of Working
We are looking for someone who, given an objective and the context, works out how to get there: think, decide, act, and follow through. In practice, this means:
- Own the outcome, not just the task. Start from what needs to be achieved, structure the problem, find and analyze the information needed, reach a conclusion, and follow through until the agreed actions are delivered.
- Useful answers, fast. Produce a solid first answer quickly, be explicit about what is fact and what is assumption, identify what is missing, and go deeper only where it would change the decision.
- Always a recommendation. Analysis ends with a position, not a list of findings: “Based on this, I recommend X because Y, and the next step is Z.”
- Proactive. Spot risks and opportunities before being asked (in an asset, market, patent situation, launch opportunity, competitive development, or portfolio assumption), raise them early, and propose how to address them.
- Independent, not isolated. Move work forward without needing approval for each step, and know when to bring in Portfolio, BD, Commercial, Regulatory, IP, Medical, Finance, or other functions.
- Constructive challenge. Question assumptions, analyses, and proposed approaches when there is good reason to, explain why, and bring a better alternative.
- Clear and concise. Communicate across functions and geographies in a structured, commercially relevant way: what is happening, why it matters, what you think, and what we should do.
Preferred Profile
- Degree in Medicine, Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, or related field; MBA or equivalent business training is an advantage.
- Typically 5–8 years of experience in New Product Planning, Portfolio Strategy, Business Development, Commercial Strategy, Medical Affairs, or pharmaceutical consulting, including a track record of taking evaluations or projects through to a decision or outcome.
- Strong ability to interpret clinical data and translate it into commercial implications and portfolio recommendations.
- Strong analytical and forecasting skills, combined with the judgment to separate what matters from what does not and to know when an answer is good enough to act on.
- Intellectual curiosity about pharmaceutical innovation and emerging assets, with the commercial sense to tell an interesting asset from a real opportunity for the company.
- Working understanding of how IP, regulatory pathways (including 505(b)(2)), development, and market access shape the value and timing of an asset; deep expertise in every area is not required.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and incomplete information, and willing to take a position, defend it with evidence, and revise it when the evidence changes.
- Clear, concise communicator, effective with colleagues and partners across functions, cultures, and geographies.
While applying, please mention the APAC countries you have handled and one novel asset you have evaluated.
