Role Summary:
The Senior Engineer - Stores engineers and delivers software solutions for Officeworks store systems, encompassing point of sale (POS), mobile POS, store handheld devices (PDTs), and supporting middleware. This role holds the technical bar for pod deliverables and serves as the primary technical reference point for other engineers.
This role enables seamless store operations and business continuity by leading complex technical design, conducting code reviews, providing hands-on engineering execution, and driving capability development. By maintaining system health, driving automated testing, and resolving production incidents, the role directly mitigates risk to store trading and supports a seamless omnichannel experience for Officeworks team members and customers.
Essential:
- Education: Tertiary degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 6 years of hands-on software development experience with demonstrated technical leadership on production systems.
- Core Technologies: Deep expertise in C#, .NET, NHibernate or Entity Framework, Node.js, Typescript/JavaScript frameworks (React, HTML, CSS) or React Native.
- Data and Cloud: Solid working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, AWS services, and REST/SOAP integration architectures.
- Engineering Tools: Proficiency with Git-based version control, CI/CD deployment pipelines, and secure coding principles.
- Problem Solving: Proven ability to diagnose the most complex technical issues, lead root cause analysis, and resolve defects in high-availability systems, with sound judgment under pressure during store-impacting incidents.
- Continuous Support: Experience leading incident and problem management within ITIL-aligned environments, driving permanent root cause remediation.
- Collaboration: Proven ability to coach engineers, conduct architectural design reviews, and establish quality and testing standards within an agile team.
Preferred:
- Retail Domain: Experience supporting retail technology systems where downtime has direct revenue impact, including POS, payment flows, or store device fleets.
- Mobile and Device Platforms: Working knowledge of mobile and device application frameworks (e.g. Cordova or native Android/iOS).Modern Tooling: Experience working with AI-assisted engineering tools and automated test frameworks.
In this role you will:
Software Engineering and Technical Delivery:
- Design, build, test, and release changes to Stores applications and integrations, including the most complex and highest-risk work, meeting agreed quality standards and delivery timeframes.
- Develop solution approaches where no established pattern exists and set the engineering patterns the pod follows.
- Own detailed technical designs for Stores pod initiatives, and review and challenge designs produced by others to uphold architectural integrity.
- Act as the primary technical reference point for the pod, guiding technical implementation across the Stores application suite.
Production Stability and Operational Support:
- Diagnose and resolve the most complex incidents and defects across Stores systems, conducting root cause analysis and implementing permanent preventative fixes.
- Account for operational health and performance of the full pod-owned Stores application suite, recognizing that Stores system downtime directly impacts retail trading.
- Participate in the team on-call roster, providing after-hours support and incident response as required, acting as escalation point for critical store system incidents.
- Own the integrity of disaster recovery plans and operational documentation across all Stores applications and integrations.
Quality Engineering and Secure Development:
- Write and maintain comprehensive automated test suites, treating test coverage as an integral component of delivery rather than a separate phase.
- Establish, embed, and govern pod release and testing standards to minimize change failure rates and defect escapes.
- Participate in peer code reviews, setting the quality bar and ensuring architectural alignment across application repositories.
- Apply Officeworks secure coding, cybersecurity, and privacy standards across all engineering deliverables, raising design-level security risks and ensuring pod compliance with enterprise security baselines.
Collaboration and Capability Building:
- Participate actively in pod planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and agile delivery ceremonies, contributing to shared operational ownership.
- Leverage AI-assisted engineering tools as standard practice during code generation, test automation, and refactoring, maintaining rigorous human peer review as the commit gate.
- Pick up engineering tasks outside primary technical specializations when required to unblock pod delivery commitments.
- Coach Engineers and Associate Engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and design walkthroughs to uplift technical capability.
- Own the pod's Definition of Done and shape pod ways of working including ownership boundaries with central technology functions, documenting Stores systems, architecture, and operational procedures.
