Role Purpose

We monitor key events and conduct research to produce thought-provoking reports, data models, and presentations. From asset valuation to corporate reports, from market supply-demand research to price-forecasting, and from the regional to the global, our analysis helps shape our customers’ commercial strategies.

We also support bespoke consulting projects, diving deeper into our data to answer unique questions. We help our Sales team retain and win new business by spending time with customers and answering questions that matter to them. We work closely with colleagues in our Data and Product functions to maintain the quality of our published data and to deliver content via our growing Lens platform.

Through carrying out primary research, responding to customer questions, and presenting to industry stakeholders, you will build relationships and a network of contacts at key operators, national bodies, and other relevant institutions. Over time you will gain specialist knowledge and develop the skills you require to progress your career at Wood Mackenzie.

Main Responsibilities

We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Analyst to join our Refined Products and Transport Fuels team. The main focus of the role will be to analyse the global fuels retail and marketing sector. We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about the future of fuels retailing and how it will develop in the coming decades to meet the needs of society in a sustainable manner.

The successful candidate will join a global team of analysts and industry experts undertaking fundamental research and modelling of aspects of the retail fuels value chains. The role offers the opportunity to develop modelling and forecasting skills and comprehensive industry knowledge through regular interaction with other members of the global Oils and Chemicals team. The successful candidate will be required to collaborate closely with cross-functional research teams to integrate perspectives, require an analytical mindset, an eye for detail, strong communication skills and the ability to provide strategic insights to our clients via presentations, webinars, or emails, in a prompt and professional manner.

About You

You have demonstrable interest and relevant experience in the downstream oil sector. Experience in fuels retailing and oil product marketing operations, or downstream oil-related market research and/or consulting projects would be an advantage. You are highly numerate, with a high attention to detail and proven analytical and problem-solving skills, enabling you to formulate leading-edge analysis from a variety of data and information. You are focused on continuous improvement and play a key role in implementing better ways of working, including your ability to synthesize solutions/ automations leveraging use of AI.

  • Keen interest in refined oil products and retail fuels market dynamics - You have a keen interest in understanding how fuel retailing and marketing markets operate across different countries and how they are evolving through the energy transition. You can undertake analysis of market structure, competitive dynamics, company strategies, consumer behaviour and changing fuels and mobility trends to develop an integrated view of the retail fuels sector. You can monitor market developments, maintain relevant datasets and analytical models, and contribute to high-quality research and commentary as part of a global team, while developing an understanding of how companies are adapting their strategies and business models to changing market conditions.
  • Analytical mindset and eye for detail - You're comfortable collecting and interpreting data, clearly articulating your findings, and seeking to enhance your knowledge by asking thoughtful questions. You can develop compelling narratives from researched/ available data points to present a strong view of the current market scenario and write insightful commentary on the challenges and opportunities for the refined products/ chemicals markets. You can maintain and develop data models, methodology and other intellectual property related to the industry. You have experience with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint, which helps you present your findings in a visually compelling way.
  • Highly adaptive team player - You thrive in a collaborative, commercial and client-centric environment. You will have a proven dedication to meeting the needs of clients and responding to feedback to make service improvements. The way in which you work enables you to build strong, collaborative relationships and influence at all levels. You use this engagement commercially to understand client perspectives and what is important to their business decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills - Your strong command of English, both written and spoken, allows you to communicate effectively in the globalised commodity market. You can support with client engagement and showcase the ability to understand and execute client enquiries and ad hoc requests in a timely and professional manner.
