Role Summary:

The Engineer - Stores engineers and delivers robust software solutions for Officeworks Stores systems, encompassing point of sale (POS), mobile POS, store handheld devices (PDTs), and supporting middleware. The role exists to build, enhance, and support critical retail technology applications, ensuring high operational stability, seamless trading continuity, and scalable technical delivery across store environments.

The role executes end-to-end software development within established architectural patterns while taking on progressively broader technical scope. By maintaining robust system health, driving automated testing, and resolving production incidents, this position directly mitigates risk to store trading and enables a seamless omnichannel experience for Officeworks team members and customers.

Essential:

  • Education: Tertiary degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 4+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with direct accountability for production system support.
  • Core Technologies: Working proficiency in at least one of C#, .NET, NHibernate or Entity Framework, Node.js, Typescript/JavaScript frameworks (React, HTML, CSS) or React Native.
  • Data and Cloud: Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, AWS services, and REST/SOAP integration architectures.
  • Engineering Tools: Solid working knowledge of Git-based version control, CI/CD deployment pipelines, and secure coding principles.
  • Problem Solving: Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues, perform root cause analysis, and resolve defects in high-availability systems.
  • Continuous Support: Experience in ITIL-aligned incident and problem management, with a track record of driving root cause remediation.
  • Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication with a track record of effective collaboration across distributed teams and locations.

Preferred:

  • Retail Domain: Experience supporting retail technology systems where downtime has direct revenue impact, including POS, payment flows, or store device fleets.
  • Mobile and Device Platforms: Working knowledge of mobile and device application frameworks (e.g. Cordova or native Android/iOS).
  • Modern Tooling: Experience working with AI-assisted engineering tools and automated test frameworks. Software Engineering and Technical Delivery
  • Design, build, test, and release changes to Stores applications and integrations working independently within established patterns, meeting agreed quality standards and delivery timeframes.
  • Execute core engineering deliverables independently within established patterns, escalating promptly where delivery standards or technical approaches are undefined.
  • Produce detailed technical designs for assigned work packages and contribute actively to broader pod design and architecture discussions.
  • Take on progressively broader technical scope across the Stores application suite.

In this role you will:

Production Stability and Operational Support:

  • Investigate and resolve production incidents and system defects across Stores systems, performing thorough root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain operational health and resilience for assigned components, recognizing that Stores system downtime directly impacts retail trading.
  • Participate in the team on-call roster, providing after-hours support and incident response as required.
  • Maintain disaster recovery plans and operational documentation across assigned Stores applications and integrations.

Quality Engineering and Secure Development:

  • Embed automated testing into everyday development workflows, treating test coverage as an integral component of delivery rather than a separate phase.
  • Apply and reinforce pod release and testing standards to minimize change failure rates and defect escapes.
  • Participate in peer code reviews to maintain high quality, consistency, and alignment across application repositories.
  • Apply Officeworks secure coding, cybersecurity, and privacy standards across all engineering deliverables, identifying and remediating vulnerabilities in application code.

Collaboration and Capability Building:

  • Participate actively in pod planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and agile delivery ceremonies, contributing to shared operational ownership.
  • Leverage AI-assisted engineering tools as standard practice during code generation, test automation, and refactoring, maintaining rigorous human peer review as the commit gate.
