We are seeking a senior backend or data engineer to design, build, and operate reliable distributed data-processing systems.
The ideal candidate combines strong software-engineering fundamentals with production experience in streaming, distributed computation, stateful processing, and data-intensive services. This person should be comfortable owning ambiguous technical problems and delivering production-ready solutions with minimal oversight.
This is an engineering role focused on scalable systems supporting data and machine-learning workloads. It is not primarily a data science or ML research position.
Here's a closer look at this key role:
- Design and implement scalable distributed services and data-processing pipelines using Spark (scala/pyspark).
- Build reliable batch and streaming systems with predictable latency and throughput.
- Develop high-quality Python services and contribute to JVM-based systems when needed.
- Improve system performance, reliability, observability, and operational efficiency.
- Design safe state-management, retry, recovery, and replay mechanisms.
- Implement idempotent processing and well-defined consistency guarantees.
- Evaluate distributed frameworks and make pragmatic architectural decisions.
- Diagnose production issues involving latency, resource pressure, data skew, concurrency, or inconsistent state.
- Establish meaningful service-level indicators and capacity-planning practices.
- Build automated unit, integration, performance, and failure-recovery tests.
- Lead technical designs and migrations for complex platform components.
- Write clear design documents, operational runbooks, and implementation plans.
- Review code and mentor engineers in distributed-systems practices.
- Collaborate with backend, ML, data, infrastructure, and product teams.
- Participate in operational support and continuously improve production readiness.
What You'll Need:
- Strong professional experience building production backend, data-platform, or distributed-processing systems especially Spark/ pyspark.
- Advanced Python/ Java software-engineering skills.
- Experience with at least one distributed processing framework such as Spark (preferred), Ray, Flink, or Databricks platform.
- Experience with Kafka or another distributed event-streaming platform.
- Strong understanding of:
Distributed-system failure modes
Data partitioning and workload skew
Concurrency and synchronization
Idempotency and delivery guarantees
State management and checkpointing
Backpressure and load shedding
Retries, recovery, and replay
Memory, network, and serialization costs
- Experience with distributed databases or large-scale state stores.
- Strong testing, debugging, profiling, and production-diagnostics skills.
- Experience operating containerized services in Kubernetes or a similar environment.
- Ability to navigate unfamiliar systems and independently drive work from investigation through production delivery.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
