Role Summary:
The Associate Engineer – Stores builds, tests, and supports software solutions across Officeworks store systems, encompassing point of sale (POS), mobile POS, store handheld devices (PDTs), and supporting middleware. Operating within a delivery pod, the role delivers assigned work packages within patterns and designs established by senior engineers.
The role builds technical and domain depth across front-end, back-end, database, and device platforms while contributing to system availability, code quality, and resolution of operational issues. By growing capability across the Stores application suite, the role supports in-store team members and trading continuity.
Essential:
- Education: Tertiary degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 2+ years of experience in software engineering, inclusive of internship or practical project experience.
- Core Technologies: Foundational capability in at least one of C#, .NET, Node.js, or JavaScript frameworks (React, HTML, CSS).
- Data and Cloud: Exposure to Microsoft SQL Server, AWS services, and REST/SOAP integration architectures.
- Engineering Tools: Working familiarity with Git-based version control, CI/CD deployment pipelines, and secure coding principles.
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with sound technical fundamentals and high attention to detail.
- Continuous Support: Exposure to ITIL-aligned incident and problem management, with an understanding of root cause remediation.
- Collaboration: Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to work within a pod-based agile team across distributed locations.
Preferred:
- Retail Domain: Exposure to retail technology systems where downtime has direct revenue impact, including POS, payment flows, or store device fleets.
- Mobile and Device Platforms: Exposure to mobile and device application frameworks (e.g. Cordova, React Native or native Android/iOS).
- Modern Tooling: Experience working with AI-assisted engineering tools and automated test frameworks.
In this role you will:
Software Engineering and Technical Delivery:
- Design, build, test, and release changes to Stores applications and integrations for assigned work packages, meeting agreed quality standards and delivery timeframes.
- Write clean, maintainable code following patterns, designs, and architectural standards established by senior engineers.
- Contribute to detailed technical designs for assigned work packages and participate constructively in design reviews.
- Build working knowledge of the Stores application suite and how changes flow through to store trading.
Production Stability and Operational Support:
- Investigate, triage, and resolve incidents and defects across Stores systems, contributing to root cause analysis and escalating promptly with full operational context where the cause is unclear.
- Maintain operational health of assigned components, recognizing that Stores system downtime directly impacts retail trading.
- Participate in the team on-call roster as technical capability allows, providing after-hours support and incident response as required.
- Maintain disaster recovery plans and operational documentation across assigned Stores applications and integrations.
Quality Engineering and Secure Development:
- Develop and maintain automated tests for changes delivered, treating test coverage as an integral component of delivery rather than a separate phase.
- Follow pod release and testing standards to minimize change failure rates and defect escapes.
- Participate in peer code reviews as both an author and reviewer to uphold code quality and consistency across application repositories.
- Apply Officeworks secure coding, cybersecurity, and privacy standards across all engineering deliverables, remediating identified vulnerabilities under senior guidance.
Collaboration and Capability Building:
- Participate actively in pod planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and agile delivery ceremonies, contributing to shared operational ownership.
- Leverage AI-assisted engineering tools as standard practice during code generation, test automation, and refactoring, maintaining rigorous human peer review as the commit gate.
- Cross-skill across front-end, back-end, database, and device technologies outside primary specializations to support flexible pod capacity.
- Actively seek coaching, pair programming, and code feedback from Engineers and Senior Engineers to build retail domain depth.
- Contribute to the pod's Definition of Done, and document Stores systems, architecture, and operational procedures as learning progresses.
