Job Family: Research and Development
Job Function: Software Engineering
About The Role
Build AI-enabled digital and voice experiences for Avaya Infinity. We are looking for a hands-on engineer who can turn product goals into system designs and carry them through implementation, testing, deployment, and production operation. You will lead technical decisions and work across user interfaces, APIs, backend services, messaging, and data. You should be comfortable explaining architectural tradeoffs, writing critical code, and diagnosing production issues.
Agentic AI development is central to how we work. We value engineers who use AI to accelerate delivery and deepen their understanding, while taking responsibility for the systems they build.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead from architecture to implementation: Translate product needs into clear designs, define interfaces and data flows, and personally implement critical functionality.
- Deliver across the stack: Build responsive user experiences and reliable services with appropriate performance, security, resilience, and observability.
- Work effectively with AI agents: Break problems into clear tasks, provide context and constraints, and guide agents through implementation and verification.
- Learn and grow with AI: Explore unfamiliar technologies and codebases, developing the understanding needed to explain, maintain, and troubleshoot the resulting work.
- Own engineering quality: Review generated code, challenge assumptions, test failure scenarios, and validate behavior through tests, measurements, and production evidence.
- Build AI-enabled capabilities: Connect models with application context, tools, and workflows, addressing evaluation, permissions, failures, latency, and cost.
- Evolve existing systems: Modernize services incrementally, preserving customer behavior and validating changes through controlled rollouts.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership: Guide design decisions, review code, mentor peers, and collaborate with product and engineering teams.
Ownership and Delivery
- Take responsibility for outcomes from problem definition through production adoption and ongoing operation.
- Show initiative: identify gaps, propose practical solutions, and move work forward without waiting for detailed instructions.
- Drive work to completion. Break ambiguous goals into achievable steps, surface blockers early, and follow through on commitments.
- Balance delivery speed with quality, make tradeoffs explicit, and validate that the result solves the intended problem.
- Stay accountable after release: investigate failures, learn from feedback, and improve the systems you build.
- Work collaboratively, share knowledge, and help others deliver.
Required Experience And Capabilities
- Typically 5–8 years of relevant software engineering experience, with demonstrated ownership of production capabilities. Scope and depth matter more than an exact year count.
- Strong backend engineering skills in at least one relevant language and practical experience delivering fullstack applications with a modern frontend framework.
- Ability to reason about distributed systems, concurrency, APIs, asynchronous messaging, data storage, and failure handling.
- Experience with automated testing, deployment, observability, and production troubleshooting.
- Practical use of AI coding agents for substantial engineering work, with the ability to explain decisions, identify mistakes, and verify results.
- Demonstrated ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and apply them effectively.
- Clear communication and the ability to move between system design and implementation details.
- Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Experience
- Production development in Rust or Go.
- Event-driven systems and messaging platforms such as Kafka, NATS, RabbitMQ, or comparable technologies.
- Modernizing or migrating existing services.
- Contact center, telecommunications, or other real-time applications.
- Production AI integrations involving tool use, retrieval, orchestration, or evaluations.
Experience
6 - 10 Years of Experience
Education
Bachelor degree or equivalent experience
Advance Degree preferred in Computer Science or Related Field
