Founding Backend Engineer – Plum Personal

Plum
Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

About PlumPlum is an employee insurance and health benefits platform focused on making health insurance simple, accessible, and inclusive for modern organizations.

Healthcare in India is seeing a phenomenal shift, with healthcare cost inflation growing at 3x the rate of general inflation. A majority of Indians are unable to afford health insurance independently, making employer-sponsored insurance an increasingly important part of healthcare access.

Plum is on a mission to provide the highest-quality insurance and healthcare to 10 million lives by FY2030, through companies that care. We are backed by Tiger Global and Peak XV Partners.

About the RolePlum Personal is building a new consumer insurance business from the ground up, and we're looking for a Backend Engineer who wants to be part of building something entirely new.

This isn't a role where you'll inherit an established system, work on isolated tickets, or simply maintain existing services. You'll be among the early engineers shaping the technology, architecture, and backend foundations of a new consumer product.

You'll own critical backend services, APIs, integrations, and AI-powered workflows across the insurance journey. You'll work closely with Product and Design, experiment with ideas, build fast, put things in front of users, and iterate based on what you learn.

We're looking for someone with a builder's mindset: someone who enjoys taking an idea from zero to one, is comfortable with ambiguity, moves fast without compromising on fundamentals, and takes ownership beyond their immediate scope.

If you enjoy building from scratch, shipping quickly, experimenting with AI, and solving problems that don't come with predefined answers, this is for you.

What You'll Do

  • Build from 0→1: Design and develop the backend foundations for a new consumer insurance business, taking ideas from initial prototypes to production-ready systems.
  • Own the backend: Build and maintain services, APIs, data models, and integrations that power the end-to-end insurance journey.
  • Build AI-powered workflows: Experiment with LLMs, generative AI, and AI-driven workflows, taking them beyond prototypes into reliable production systems.
  • Move fast and ship: Work closely with Product and Design to turn ideas into working software, test with users, and iterate quickly.
  • Think beyond the ticket: Take ownership of problems end-to-end, identify gaps, challenge assumptions, and figure out what needs to be built next.
  • Build for reliability: Make thoughtful engineering decisions around scalability, performance, debugging, observability, and system reliability.
  • Leverage AI: Use AI coding tools and models to accelerate development, while understanding, validating, and taking ownership of the code you ship.

You Might Be the One If

  • You have strong backend engineering fundamentals, particularly in data modelling, API design, system architecture, debugging, and building reliable services.
  • You've built and shipped software end-to-end, whether in a startup, an early-stage team, an independent project, or a product you've built yourself.
  • You have experimented with or shipped LLM-powered workflows, generative AI applications, or AI-driven product experiences. You can clearly explain what you built and your individual contribution.
  • You have a strong builder's mindset. You don't wait for perfectly defined requirements; you enjoy figuring things out and turning ambiguous problems into working solutions.
  • You enjoy moving fast, experimenting, breaking things, learning, and shipping improvements rather than spending weeks perfecting plans.
  • You're comfortable working in a 0→1 environment where priorities evolve, processes are still being built, and you may need to wear multiple hats.
  • You actively use AI tools to improve your engineering velocity and know how to critically evaluate their output.
  • You take ownership of outcomes, not just the code assigned to you.

Experience: Exceptional undergraduates and early-career engineers are welcome. We value ability, ownership, curiosity, and clear thinking over years of experience or pedigree.

What We BelieveWe believe the best products are built by people who care deeply about the problems they're solving.

We value builders over process followers, ownership over titles, and shipped products over presentations.

We want to create an environment where a good idea doesn't spend weeks waiting to become reality. You experiment, build, put it in front of users, learn, and make it better.

The Deal

  • Engagement: Full-time or consultant (minimum 6 months). We're open to both.
  • Location: Bangalore (Whitefield).
  • Work mode: In-office.
  • Opportunity: Be an early engineering hire for Plum Personal and help build a new consumer insurance business from the ground up.
