Senior Full-Stack Architect – JavaScript & AI

What will you own?

• Own the architecture of RockED’s full stack: Node.js backend services, React web apps, React Native mobile apps, data layer and cloud infrastructure.
• Design scalable, resilient, maintainable systems with clear service boundaries, API contracts and data models.
• Lead architecture and design reviews, and document key decisions and trade-offs so the whole team understands the “why.”

Zero-to-one builds and system evolution

• Build new systems and products from scratch, from first design to production rollout.
• Lead major system redesigns and migrations, evolving the platform without disrupting users.
• Pay down tech debt strategically, knowing when to refactor, when to rebuild and when to leave it alone.

Hands-on engineering

• Write production code across the stack every week. This isn’t a “slides and diagrams” architect role.
• Build core business logic, APIs and data pipelines, and design relational database schemas for integrity, security and fast retrieval.
• Own features end to end, from design to deployment and monitoring.

Performance and user experience at scale

• Make our apps fast, from API response times and database query optimisation to mobile app performance and front-end rendering.
• Build with the end user in mind: smooth, reliable and responsive experiences on every device.
• Set up observability (logging, monitoring and tracing) so problems are caught before users notice them.

AI-native architecture

• Define how AI fits into the platform, including LLM integrations, RAG pipelines, AI agents and intelligent features that make learning more personal.
• Prototype quickly, measure honestly, and take AI from hackathon idea to production-grade feature.
• Lead AI-assisted development in engineering: AI coding tools, automated testing and code review.

Technical influence and standards

• Build agreement on architecture decisions through clear thinking and strong communication, not authority.
• Explain complex trade-offs simply to engineers, product managers and leadership alike.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, design discussions and pairing, and raise the technical bar across the team.
• Work closely with Product and Design to turn ideas into well-built products and shape the technical roadmap.

What do you bring?

• 10–13 years of software engineering experience, with significant time at high-growth, product-based startups.
• Proven experience building systems from zero to one and leading major architecture and design changes.
• Prior work on B2C applications where performance and user experience mattered.

Technical depth (must-have)

• Extensive hands-on expertise in the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem: Node.js on the backend; React and React Native on the frontend.
• Strong command of relational databases: schema design, query optimisation, indexing and data integrity.
• Solid system design: distributed systems, microservices, event-driven architecture, API design (REST/GraphQL) and caching strategies.
• Strong engineering fundamentals: CI/CD, automated testing (unit, integration, end-to-end), code quality and secure coding practices (OWASP).
• Experience with Sequelize, MongoDB and AWS (e.g., EC2, Lambda, RDS, S3).
• Experience with mobile-first products and app performance tuning.

AI expertise (must-have)

• Hands-on experience building with LLMs: prompt engineering, RAG, embeddings, vector databases and AI APIs.
• A forward-looking view of where AI is heading, and how to architect for it.
• Daily use of AI tools in your own engineering workflow.
