Frontend Engineer - Platform

About Mstack:

Mstack is building the world’s first AI-native chemical company.

We combine AI, scientific R&D, software and real-world manufacturing to dramatically shorten the time it takes to move from a chemical idea to commercial production. Our technology powers Chemstack AI, our chemistry intelligence platform, as well as a growing set of internal and external products across commerce, operations, automation and decision-making.

As Mstack grows, software is becoming the operating layer connecting our customers, scientists, commercial teams, supply chain and manufacturing ecosystem.

About the Platform Team

The Platform team builds the technology foundation that powers products across Mstack.

Some of what we build supports Chemstack AI: agentic workflows, enterprise applications and scientific tooling. But our scope goes much wider.

We are also building products for running commerce workflows, managing complex operational processes, enabling teams to make metric-driven decisions, automating internal workflows, and creating reusable platform capabilities that allow new products to be built quickly.

Our goal is not to build isolated applications. We want to build strong product and engineering primitives that can be reused across Mstack.

Frontend engineering is a major part of that experience.

The Role

  • We are looking for a Frontend Engineer who enjoys turning complex workflows into products that feel simple, fast and intuitive.
  • You will work closely with product managers, designers and backend engineers to build applications used by scientists, internal teams, enterprise customers and operational users.
  • This is not a role where the frontend is just a thin presentation layer over APIs.
  • You will be expected to understand the product deeply, make good engineering and UX decisions, and own features from idea to production.
  • As the Platform team grows, you will also help us build reusable frontend foundations that can support multiple products rather than solving the same problem repeatedly.

What You'll Do

  • Build production-grade products
  • Own frontend features end to end, from understanding the problem and shaping the interaction to implementation, testing and production rollout.
  • Build interfaces for workflows that can involve complex data, long-running processes, AI interactions and multi-step business operations.
  • Create excellent user experiences
  • Turn complicated underlying systems into interfaces that feel clear and predictable.
  • Think carefully about information hierarchy, loading states, failures, permissions, empty states and edge cases rather than focusing only on the happy path.
  • Build reusable frontend foundations
  • Help create shared components, design patterns and frontend infrastructure that can be reused across different Mstack products.
  • Contribute to our design system and establish conventions that make it easier for teams to build consistent experiences.
  • Work on data-heavy applications
  • Build dashboards, operational views and analytical experiences that help teams understand what is happening and make better decisions.
  • Work with tables, filters, visualizations, search, workflows and real-time or frequently changing data.
  • Build AI-native interfaces
  • Design and implement experiences around agents and AI-powered workflows.
  • This may include conversational interfaces, structured AI outputs, tool execution, long-running tasks, intermediate states, citations, feedback loops and human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • The challenge is not simply putting a chat box on a page. It is figuring out how people should interact with intelligent systems when the underlying task is complex.
  • Care about performance and quality
  • Build responsive applications that remain reliable as products and datasets grow.
  • Improve rendering performance, client-side state management, API usage, error handling, testing and observability.
  • Collaborate across the stack
  • Work closely with backend, platform, AI, product and design teams.
  • You should be comfortable understanding APIs, data models and system behavior even when your primary responsibility is the frontend.

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, primarily working on frontend or full-stack applications.
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript.
  • Strong experience with React and modern frontend development.
  • Good understanding of browser fundamentals, component architecture, state management and frontend performance.
  • Experience building real production applications rather than only static websites or landing pages.
  • Ability to translate product requirements and designs into clean, maintainable implementations.
  • Strong attention to product quality and user experience.
  • Comfortable working with APIs and understanding backend data models.
  • Experience debugging production issues and handling edge cases.
  • Good engineering fundamentals around testing, code review and maintainability.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of features.

Nice to Have

Experience with one or more of the following would be especially useful:

  • Next.js or similar React frameworks.
  • Design systems or reusable component libraries.
  • Data-heavy B2B or enterprise applications.
  • Dashboards, analytics or visualization libraries.
  • AI or LLM-powered applications.
  • Streaming or real-time interfaces.
  • Microfrontends or modular frontend architectures.
  • Performance optimization for large frontend applications.
  • Accessibility and responsive design.
  • Backend or full-stack development experience.

How We Think About Frontend Engineering

We care about engineers who think beyond converting a Figma file into components.

A strong frontend engineer should be able to look at a workflow and ask:

  • Is this the right interaction for the user?
  • What happens when this operation takes 30 seconds instead of 300 milliseconds?
  • How should we represent partial progress or failure?
  • Can this component become a reusable platform capability?
  • What information does the user actually need to make a decision?
  • Will this experience still work when the underlying dataset becomes 100x larger? You don't need to be a designer, but you should care deeply about how the product works for the person using it.

Why Mstack

  • Build across multiple product categories
  • You will not be confined to maintaining one narrow application. The Platform team works across AI products, commerce, operations, analytics and internal systems.
  • Work on difficult interfaces
  • Scientific workflows, agentic systems and operational platforms create frontend problems that go far beyond CRUD applications.
  • See your work used
  • The products you build are used by real teams making real scientific, commercial and operational decisions.
  • Shape the foundation early
  • The Platform team is still establishing many of its frontend architecture, design-system and product-engineering conventions.
  • You will have an opportunity to influence how these are built rather than simply inheriting them.
  • Work with a strong multidisciplinary team
  • You will work alongside product engineers, AI engineers, data teams, scientists and domain experts tackling problems that span software and the physical world.

What Success Looks Like

  • Within your first few months, you should be able to independently own meaningful product features from requirement to production.
  • Over time, we expect you to become someone who not only ships interfaces but also improves how the broader team builds frontend products: through better abstractions, stronger product thinking, reusable components and higher engineering standards.
  • We value demonstrated work over a particular degree or career path.
  • If you have built products you are proud of, we would love to hear about what you owned, the decisions you made and what you learned.
